IWM Technique: Mowing and Cutting

When is mowing and/or cutting recommended?

• The infested area is flat and relatively dry
• The infested area is not easily accessible to use other control methods due to overgrowth
• The plant is an annual or biennial that does not reproduce vegetatively
• When the mowing or cutting can be repeated throughout the season before the plants fully flower and set seed

Limits to Success:

• This technique rarely kills the enitre plant
• If not performed at the correct time and plants have produced seed, mowing or cutting can lead to further spread of the infestation.
• Not effective for plants that reproduce vegetatively
• Mowing and cutting must be done repeatedly throughout the season and for multiple years for effective results
