Nevada agriculture is an integral part of our communities, providing livelihood, a sense of pride to countless Nevadans, and food, fuel and fiber to the state and around the world.
The diverse landscapes of Nevada have presented unique challenges to our dedicated farmers and ranchers. The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) has worked collaboratively to overcome the hurdles posed by the state’s varied climate. Together, we have worked to strengthen local agriculture, invest in infrastructure, improve supply chain issues and provide crucial resources for farmers and ranchers to expand operations and diversify crops.
Initiatives like the Home Feeds Nevada program and development of the Nevada Meat and Poultry Inspection program bring more Nevada foods to local plates. Through the Home Feeds Nevada program, the NDA purchased over $2.6 million of Nevada-produced food from farmers and ranchers, bringing over 922,000 pounds of Nevada food to food-insecure populations throughout the state. The Nevada Meat and Poultry Inspection program will offer an expanded outlet for Nevada products to be sold and keep more Nevada products in the state. In partnership with Made in Nevada, the Nevada Craft Beverage Passport showcases Nevada’s finest craft beverage establishments.
As the year draws to a close and we prepare to embrace the holiday season, let us reflect on the invaluable contributions of our Nevada farmers and ranchers who work tirelessly to ensure our tables are full. This Thanksgiving, let us not only express gratitude to them but make active choices to include local products on the Thanksgiving table. When buying local, you’re not only enjoying the finest products Nevada has to offer, but also directly contributing to our local economy.
