$410,000 awarded to 48 schools in support of school garden efforts

The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) announced 48 schools in five Nevada counties have received grant awards in support of school garden efforts. Thanks to Senate Bill (SB) 167, signed into law by Governor Brian Sandoval on June 8, 2017, which allowed the NDA to appropriate up to $10,000 in funding to each qualifying school during the 2017-2018 school year.

“Encouraging consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is an ongoing priority for Nevada schools to promote healthy living and learning for students,” Director Jim Barbee said. “We hope this funding will encourage Title I schools to establish and maintain school gardens, where students can learn applied sciences and healthy eating.”

This educational approach also allows teachers to provide a course of study addressing multiple subject areas in a hands-on setting as an extension of the classroom.

SB 167 will also provide a total of $205,000 in fiscal year 2018-2019. Nevada Title 1 schools will be able to apply for up to $5,000. A request for proposal will be released summer 2018.
