Frequently Asked Questions

Who can purchase meat or poultry that is processed at a State permitted custom operation?

All meat that is processed at a State permitted custom operation is for the exclusive use of the owner of the animal, residents of their house, and/or their non-paying employees or guests. With poultry, restrictions are determined by the exemption that you qualify for.  For more information, read the USDA guidance on custom meat and poultry exemptions.

Does custom meat or poultry get a USDA stamp?

No.  State permitted custom operations will be inspected by health inspectors from the Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA).  The NDA’s responsibility is to ensure the permittee is operating in a safe and sanitary manner.  The NDA will not inspect every animal that is processed.

I did not get all the meat that was processed from my animal. Do you assist in these situations?

No.  The NDA’s only responsibility is the safe and sanitary operation of permitted businesses.

Does a processor have the right to reject an animal that is brought to them?

Yes.  If the processor believes the animal has not been properly handled and is a potential health/safety risk, they can reject the animal.

Do I need a brand inspection before my cattle is slaughtered?

Yes. Nevada Revised Statute 565 requires a brand inspection be done by an NDA inspector before cattle or horses are transported out of a brand district or across state lines, before cattle are slaughtered, and whenever a change of ownership takes place.

Am I obligated to give the processor my personal information?

Yes. The processor is required by Nevada Revised Statutes to keep records of all sales. These records include the name and contact information of every customer.

If I charge my customers by the weight of their animal(s), do I have to get a certified scale?

Yes.  The scale(s) must be certified by the NDA Division of Measurement Standards. You can find an inspector on the Weights and Measures website.

Does the NDA offer any guidance with the plan review?

I have filled out the application, paid the fee, and submitted my plan review. How long will it take to get my permit?

A permit will be issued once an NDA inspector has approved the plans, has all supporting documents, and has conducted a pre-opening inspection.  More information on plan reviews and/or supporting documents can be found on the plan review guidance webpage.
