Parasitology: |
Animals
of the most susceptible age and displaying clinical signs should be selected
to increase the likelihood of detecting parasites.
|
Specimen submission:
|
Fresh feces should be
collected from individual animals. Feces should be submitted in whirl pack
or Ziploc type
bags, double
bagged and properly labeled. In cases of diarrhea, collect 5ml of feces
directly from the animal within 12-24 hours of onset and before of onset and
before treatment.
Giardia spp.
are very fragile, diagnostic procedures should be performed on a fresh warm
fecal sample to insure the likelihood of detection. If this is not
possible, then hand delivery is an alternative. Hand delivery to the
laboratory should be considered.
Specimens can also be
submitted in 2 preservatives 10 % formalin and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-fixative
solution.
10% formalin is good
for preservation of morphology of helminthes eggs, larvae and protozoan
cysts and coccidian.
PVA is good for
preservation of morphology of protozoan trophozoites and cysts.
(The procedures listed below are not all inclusive. They represent the tests
most commonly requested. For other tests, please call the laboratory at
775-688-1182, ext 231 for details.)
